A Handy Guide to Puget Sound's Best Islands
Puget Sound has some of the most beautiful islands around. Whether you live in the area and you’re looking for a unique day trip or you’re visiting and want to see the best the area has to offer, make sure you take some time to check out a few of these top islands in Puget Sound.
Bainbridge Island
Bainbridge Island is a 35-minute ferry ride from Seattle. Once you’re on the island, take the short five-minute walk to the small town of Winslow. Stroll through the downtown area and you’ll find shopping ranging from antiques to art galleries. If you’re looking for a little relaxation when you’re on Bainbridge Island, consider heading to Bloedel Reserve. This award-winning public garden has 150 acres of pristine woodlands and beautifully manicured gardens, including a reflection pool, Japanese garden, and moss garden.
Vashon Island
There are three ferries that take you to the lovely island of Vashon. Once you’re there, be sure to take some time to explore Point Robinson Lighthouse. Climb to the top to see breathtaking views of Puget Sound and the beach. The lighthouse grounds also offer picnic tables and walking trails. If you’re looking to do some shopping, stroll along the main street in downtown Vashon and check out the boutiques, art galleries, and gift shops.
Blake Island
If you’re interested in learning more about the history of the area, you’ll want to take a trip to Blake Island. The only way to get to Blake Island is by private boat or tour boat. Book passage on the tour boat and your adventure begins as you take the 45-minute narrated cruise from Seattle to Blake Island.
Once you arrive, you’ll head to Tillicum Village to enjoy a tasty salmon buffet meal followed by a show that highlights Northwest Indian dancing and storytelling. Afterward, you have time to explore the grounds and visit the gift shop before the ferry returns to Seattle.
Whidbey Island
Whidbey Island is the largest island in the Puget Sound, and it offers numerous tourist attractions and recreational activities for your enjoyment. While you can take the Coupeville Ferry to the island, you can also drive your vehicle over the Deception Pass Bridge. If you choose this option, make sure you take some time to stop and explore Deception Pass State Park. This 4,134-acre park is one of the most popular in the area, and it offers beaches, fishing, hiking, horse trails, bird watching, camping, and more.
Camano Island
When you’re looking for a place where you can get away for a while, Camano Island is the place to go. Even though you can drive to Camano Island by heading west on State Highway 532, the island still maintains a quiet and relaxed feel. Spend the night at one of the waterfront cottages and then head out to take in stunning views of the water at Camano Island State Park.
If you want to see the best that the Puget Sound islands have to offer, make sure you check out these top spots and their beautiful attractions.
