Certified pre-owned vehicles (CPO) have existed for decades but not everyone is familiar with the term. They may have been buying used cars from a used-car lot instead of taking advantage of what CPO’s have to offer.

To qualify as a CPO high standards must be met. The car must be a used vehicle at a manufacturer authorized dealership and has to pass a thorough certification process set out by the automaker. This means it will be inspected and tested in over 100 areas, with some automakers testing up to 300. If it doesn’t pass it will be repaired. It must be no more than a few years old, and low mileage, usually less than 36,000. It is inspected by a factory trained mechanic and you should receive a report. Essentially, this car should look and feel like a new unused car when you purchase it.

A CPO comes with a better warranty compared with what you would typically receive at a used-car lot. The manufacturer offers a comprehensive warranty, including major mechanical and electrical components, for a period of time and mileage, whichever comes first. They are usually extended versions of the original manufacturer warranty. Some warranties include benefits such as 24/7 roadside assistance, rental car assistance and towing. However, the warranty for a CPO vary between automakers and can differ between dealerships.
