What's New in the 2017 Jeep Wrangler

The Wrangler has been Jeep’s most recognizable model for many years, changing here and there with each generation. Jeep is planning on releasing a fully redesigned version of the Jeep Wrangler for 2018, but the 2017 model received a few updates as well. Read on to see what’s new with the current Wrangler, along with the most valuable returning features.

Safety and Security

Like last year, modern safety features of the 2017 Wrangler include Trailer Sway Control, a system that automatically counters any force that might cause a trailer to tip over. Also, the Wrangler’s Electronic Stability Control system comes with an Electronic Roll Mitigation system. With these working together, almost nothing could make the model roll over, whether making a hard turn on the highway or while going up a steep hill.

Improved Lighting Options

Unlike in 2016, more models of the 2017 Jeep Wrangler will come with LED headlights for better visibility at night or in thick weather. Fog lamps are now standard across more trim levels as well. Specifically, the 2017 Wrangler Sahara and Rubicon get these features standard, while the base Sport and Sport S have them as options.

Eye-opening Appearance

The Wrangler’s exterior features have traditionally been seen as practical rather than stylish, such as the removable top and doors and special front tow hooks. However, in the current generation, the Wrangler is no longer a purely utilitarian compact SUV, and it looks better with each year. From the compact Willy’s Wheeler Edition and the hard-top Sahara to the beefy and confident Rubicon, each trim level has its own subtle personality differences.

Cold Weather Package

This exciting new package appears on Sport S and Rubicon Wrangler models. Drivers who choose this affordable package will replace the P225/75R16 BSW on/off-road tires with P245/75R16 OWL all-season tires. These apply equally well to either the Sport S’s or Rubicon’s 17-inch wheels. Other features of the Cold Weather Package include an engine-coolant heater; heated seats throughout; heavy-duty, all-weather floor mats; one-touch power windows; keyless remote entry; power locks; and heated power mirrors.

Unbeatable Four-wheel Drive

If you’re after a capable 4×4 SUV, the Wrangler should be at the top of your list. Equally capable on rocks, sand, mud, or snow, the Wrangler uses a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine with up to 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. This ratio keeps the SUV brisk on the pavement while also unstoppable against low-speed, off-road challenges. Ground clearance is extra high on models such as the Rubicon thanks to a Dana 44 front axle. The powerful 4×4 system is also great for towing stranded vehicles, with a max capacity of 3,500 pounds when fully equipped.

Until we see the major changes on the 2018 Jeep Wrangler, there’s no doubt that 2017 is the best year for the model so far. Jeep’s signature vehicle is high-value, adaptable, and loaded with diverse options, but potentially it is even more suited to cold weather with the new 2017 package.
