Emergency Vehicle Alert System Improves Awareness and Safety on the Road

How does the Emergency Vehicle Alert System work?

If you already own a 2018 or newer vehicle with a Uconnect system, you’re already part of the 1.8 million customers who get the Emergency Vehicle Alert System as a standard feature. EVAS is among the newest releases made to increase driver awareness by alerting them of an approaching emergency vehicle or upcoming road hazard. The system was released in collaboration with Safety Cloud, a digital alert platform from HAAS Alert. Safety Cloud uses a Vehicle-to-Everything platform that connects road crews, private fleets, and now emergency vehicles with drivers by delivering digital alerts.

So, how does it work? When an ambulance, fire truck, or emergency vehicle approaches, drivers with a Uconnect will receive an in-vehicle alert on the screen. That allows drivers to find a safe area to pull over to allow the emergency vehicle to pass. Additionally, it can alert drivers to keep an eye out for a potential road hazard. The EVAS is proven to do more than just improve customer satisfaction; it’s part of a strategy to reduce collisions and get everyone home safely after every drive. Its recent release has already come with huge success, and it’s just the start.

As drivers get used to newly-available technologies like the EVAS, Stellantis hopes to integrate more safety alert features like HELP. The Hazard Enhanced Location Protocol works like the EVAS by sending alerts from disabled vehicles to nearby drivers. In the event of an accident, emergency, or flat tire, drivers can send an alert through the Safety Cloud that gets passed on to other drivers, alerting them of their precise location. It gives approaching drivers a 15-20 second warning, giving drivers the opportunity to become more aware of the disabled vehicle. Since disabled vehicles on roads are a leading cause of collisions and fatalities, the HELP system could reduce those numbers and increase safety even further by promoting a vehicle-to-vehicle network.
